On the St. Olaf College music compilation cassette (yes, it was that long ago) Double Exposure II: Coffeehouse Revenge there was a guy named Rob VanVliet, who sang two songs. One was "If This Is Crazy" and it was super great. It was so great I learned it myself and played it live a few times. Now in the age of the internet I search for him and his song but do not find him. What gives, internet? Come on!
Can anyone help me find this guy and find out if he's made any more great music since 1994?

I think my brother Scott roomed with Rob for part of his freshman year. I don't know if he still keeps in touch with him. I'll ask. Also I think the Van and the Vliet have a space between them, though I could be wrong. I googled Rob Van Vliet, and got several hits, but all seemed to be too old or too young to be *the* rob Van Vliet. He had some cool poems in the St. Olaf literary mag as well. Oh, and he was in "Tracers" with Rob Knowles and others.
ReplyDeleteI remember "Tracers" - in the Lion's Pause, I think? I was really impressed with Chris Taykalo in that, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks to frequent commenter lilpudn for delivering what presumably is Mr. Van Vliet's current home address, which I have chosen not to publish as a comment out of respect for his privacy.
Well, I sent off a letter to Rob Van Vliet's address as listed at our college alum site. We'll know soon if a) the address is right and if so b) whether he made any further music recordings after "Double Exposure".
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for all the kind words -- I'm flattered!
ReplyDeleteSo, in summary: (a) the address IS right, and (b) yes I did, lots.
Also, I roomed with Scott sophomore year -- though he & I were in the same "corridor" first-year. Ah "Tracers"! Damn, wotta play that was! I concur that Chris Taykalo rocked; he played the drill sergeant. The whole cast was really awesome; my last truly amazing drama experience.
And, in keeping with the Fundamental Interconnectedness Of All Things: (1) my copy of the Larson tape just resurfaced about a month ago, after being officially declared dead-n-gone for lo these many years (except, ugh, I think I just re-misplaced it. It was right there the other day. It’s around here somewhere...) And (2) I'm flying to the west coast literally tomorrow morning, where (among other things) I will be re-recording "Clown Car" with my former bandmate in a real studio run by a friend of his. How wild is that?
Anyway, Mr Memphis, I'll backchannel you so we have each other's email addresses. Gotta run: I'm packing, and then flying on outta here in the morning.
